HEALT LO Rover reporting and Photography by Joyce McCombs.

3rd Annual Canine Floating of the Lanterns Memorial was held April 25th at Lake Baldwin in Winter Park Florida. This was a first for me, and I had no idea how emotional it would be. I walked around snapping pictures of the various sites – the wall of dog tags, posters and pictures of lost loved pets – under the assumption that I was simply covering an event for The New Barker. As I observed people of all ages creating beautiful lanterns by hand – many christened with tear drops – it became much more. After a procession down to the dock, the lanterns were

placed into canoes and taken out to the lake to be released. Several people stepped up to the mic to say a few words about the impact that their pet had made in their lives. One young boy, about 11 or 12 years old made a particularly emotional speech. He

talked about the games and activities he and his “best friend” had so much fun sharing, including the quiet snuggly moments. He brought the entire crowd to tears. One couple I met made it especially difficult for me to hold back the tears. The young lady did not want to be pho- tographed as she was deeply emo- tional over the loss of her two pets but she wanted to speak about them. They were sick and she vol- unteered to foster them, giving them a home for the short time they had left to live. That was when I understood the importance of this event, where people of all ages can come and have a moment to grieve the loss and celebrate the little lives that make such a deep impact on our hearts. Sharing a bond with others who understand the grief of losing a pet is a healthy way to cope and allow the healing to begin.

Cheryl Scripter:“The event allowed me to remember my beloved Oscar, Deedles and Rocky.
