St. Augustine Or Bust. A Cross-Country Bike Ride With A Pack Of Yorkies.
FIND SOMETHING THAT MOTIVATES YOU and the passion to make a differ- ence will be there. More often than not, we don’t know what that motivation will be until we’re faced with the reali- ty of some mitigating factor that changes the course of our lives forever. “Two years ago, my brother,
Damon, died after taking two pain pills that weren’t prescribed to him to relieve discomfort from an injured knee so he could get some sleep,” said Virgil Tanner. “The side effects stopped his breathing and he never woke up. It was a sudden shock that tore through my entire family.” Virgil and his wife Lacey, decided
to bike across the country in Damon’s honor. “Lacey and I are just average Americans. We’re not professional cyclists, but we decided to get off the couch and ride for drug awareness in the hopes of preventing another family from suffering the same tragedy,” said Virgil.
The trip began on April 27 out of
Ocean Beach, California and was com- pleted 3100 miles later on July 15 in St. Augustine, Florida. That’s where we caught up with the couple. The Tanners, as it turns out, did not travel alone. Their four Yorkies tagged along the entire way, towed in bicycle carts behind each bike. The family’s itinerary

included stops at schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and community centers. “Our thought was to help kids, and
adults, understand the harmful effects drugs can have. Rather than telling kids not to take drugs, we gave them some facts and shared true life stories of other kids who overcame a drug problem. Kids are very smart and will make the right choice when given real informa- tion to think about,” said Lacey. The Tanners place the success of
the 3100 mile journey squarely on their dogs, Bug, Doodle, Hazel and Cecil. “We brought them along because they are family and we couldn’t leave them behind for two months. We are so glad the Yorkies agreed to travel with us,” said Virgil. “It wasn’t easy to pull an extra 20
pounds of Yorkie 3000 miles but they turned out to be a huge godsend and helped us in ways that only man’s best friend can,” added Lacey. The couple loved coming back to
St. Augustine. The dogs loved chasing the waves on the beach. “St. Augustine is where Lace and I
went on one of our first dates. It is where we first confessed our love to each other and knew we were going to get married back in 2008. St. Augustine was a great place to end our 3000 mile journey,” said Virgil.
