AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR COVER ARTIST, WHAT I KNOW Beth Whitlow

A FASCINATOR IS A HEADPIECE, a style of millinery, and the inspiration for some of Beth Whitlow’s charming dog portraits. “When I first saw the crazy fascinators at the royal wedding of Prince

William and Kate Middleton, I couldn’t believe that anyone would wear something so outrageous, especially Princess Beatrice. Her fashion was so boisterous I was certain she was protesting the wedding,” said Beth. “I want- ed to practice painting dogs a bit more and thought it would be funny to put some of these outrageous fascinators on them. After I had done two or three paintings, I gained more confidence. Another member of our art guild saw what I was doing and offered me half of her upcoming show at our local arts center. It’s hard to describe how excited and terrified I was at this offer. I had 13 pieces in that show, and still have a few that I will never sell. They are so meaningful to me as the first in this whole series.”
