and it’s true – as Hub pointed out thoughtfully handing me some pliers – that at least these days fishing hooks are barb-less …

But it shows you what we are up against

– wetness and all it brings in its wake. It overflows, it drips, it pours, it seeps, it gushes; an unrelenting tsunami of liquid. unless, that is, you turn on a tap when you will find you have run out. (No bad thing really as nobody will ever convince me that the water in our tanks hasn’t been drained off from the nearest kennels.) However, boats are clever, alluring things. Just

when you are driven demented to the point of opening all seven seacocks while shouting, “You want gallons of water inside? Fine! Here you are! Have some!” she charms you all over again. the halyards clink, swans nibble at the hull, the sunbeams dance on the wood and even the ropes straining a little and the hull creaking are in some way a reminder of why you choose to live in this extraordinary manner. And anyway – it will all be fixed in warmer weather with a little light (!) carpentry, paint and the help of younger, stronger friends! In truth, as long as all is well beneath the waterline,

seacocks, anodes etc, the rest is up to how much it bothers you. some people have pristine vessels, others are nearly a health hazard and most are like us, in between and working on it! It’s good to listen to more experienced mariners but in the end you have to remember that she belongs to you and once you’ve got to know her, trust your own instincts about what she really needs. It isn’t rocket science and frankly, if you asked a hundred mariners what to do, you would have a hundred totally different opinions, in my opinion. We’ll be moving to a summer mooring mid-river

shortly so on the way back from church, I called in to the Harbour office to collect our stickers. the delightful Diane informed me, with unholy glee, that after careful consideration she’d allocated us the number “666”. Aaargh!!! Blown out of the water again!!
