What wine shall we drink tonight? W

e all love having a glass of wine whether it’s a pick me up after a long day, or sharing a bottle

with a group of friends. The difficulty is knowing which wine to pick when you’re bombarded with a wall of wine labels on the shelves. We all have our favourites and often aim for those familiar labels and grapes but sometimes we all need to get out there and try something new as you never know what gems you might find hiding in the wings. A fun and interesting way to help you make your decision is to come to one of our Open House Tastings (21, 28 & 29 May) at our cellars in Embridge (Stoke Fleming), just outside Dartmouth. The tastings are free, informal and showcase a range of about 10 wines from the Old and New World. With plenty of parking you can drop in at any time between 11.30am and 2pm and take your time to sample something new. Our wines are priced from £6.50 upwards and, as we import the majority of our wines directly from the producer, we are able to pass on real value to our customers. If you want to learn a little bit more about wines why

not come along to one of Tutored Tasting evenings. Again these are fun, informal events and work rather like a wine workshop when we invite an expert from the world of wine to share their knowledge about a particular grape or wine region. We held our first Tutored evening in March with David Courtney-Clack from Awin Barrett Siegel – experienced wine importers who have won the coveted IWSC wine import of the year trophy no less than 5 times. With his expert knowledge, in a small but informal

group David was able to guide us through 8 different wines from all over the world - all made from the Pinot Noir grape. Tasting the wines side by side we were able to compare how much the climate affected the taste, colour and style of the wines and the Pinot Noir from Tasmania was a particular success. These events are a great opportunity to find out what you really like in a wine and with your essential tasting notes you can remind yourself of your favourites when you get home.

The next Tutored Tasting is on Friday 27 May with Anthony Barne MW and will focus on Bordeaux and its cousins. A few thoughts about this most famous wine region of France to whet your appetite.

• Situated close to the Atlantic coast in France’s south-west region Bordeaux is home to some of the world’s most famous names in the wine world, Latour, Mouton-Roth- schild, Haut-Brion and d’Yquem for starters.

• Part of its fame lies with the port’s 700 years of wine-ex- porting history, much of it going to Britain where the red wines are still known as ‘claret’ - a term denoting a pale red colour. Due to advances in wine-making, the reds are more robust nowadays, although the greatest combine power with grace and delicacy.

• The Bordeaux area is also home to many dry white wines and the gloriously rich dessert wines of Sauternes.

If you’re interested in hearing more why not come along on 27 May. Tickets, including supper, are just £18 per person. Places are limited to 16 and booking is essential so give us a call!

And don’t forget that our wine cellar is open most days, stocking a range of over 50 wines. If you fancy a visit just drop us an email or call to ensure we are in and we’ll look forward to introducing you to our unique range of wines. Choosing wine can be daunting, our aim is to make it a pleasure! We look forward to seeing you soon at Michael Sutton’s Cellar.
