spent the day gathering words from the on-board commentary and the wildlife and activities they observed to create poetry and a piece of non- fictional writing. “Learning is about so much more than being in a classroom and we really appreciate Dart Harbour’s generous funding of the trip,” said tina Rodwell-Lynn of Blackawton school. “We wanted to give the children a real experience to develop their writing skills.” she added: “Rather than the children attempting to write poetry about rivers from their classrooms we were able to take them out to experience the sights and sounds of the beautiful River Dart.

previously experienced the River Dart close up and the trip was an ideal opportunity for them to experience it first-hand and get inspired by, learn about and appreciate its outstanding natural beauty,” said Capt Giles. “We were approached by Blackawton school to help them out and the Harbour Board agreed to sponsor the trip as part of its annual Young Champions Award.”

Jan retires from yacht taxi service After 12 years working on the Dart Harbour yacht taxi, Jan scott has decided to hang up his sou’wester in exchange for dry land. At a presentation to mark his long service, Jan thanked the Dart Harbour team and said how much he had enjoyed working with the team and the support they always give to yacht taxi drivers. “I have very much enjoyed the opportunity to work on the Dart and to meet so many interesting people who are involved in one way or another with the river and, of course, the many visiting yachtsmen who use the Dart Harbour Yacht taxi service when they visit the harbour. It has been a very enjoyable twelve years”. “thank-you

very much for this gathering and gift. A

complete surprise and undeserved but much appreciated.” As well as being a yacht taxi driver, Jan is a board member and former vice chairman of Dart Harbour Board and has greatly contributed to harbour life in and around Dartmouth, said Capt Giles. “I would like to thank Jan on behalf of staff, the board and public alike for his loyal and trustworthy service to Dart Harbour,” said Capt Giles. “He has turned up for his shift in all weathers, day and night, summer and winter to provide outstanding yacht taxi cover. “It’s also been so pleasing to

have a board member taking the opportunity presented by running the yacht taxi to welcome visitors and communicate with the public direct.”
