69 A bright future ahead this year

market as the results of Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s first Fine Art auction of the year proved. once again the internet bidding raced along, sometimes even just between the two internet bidding services that BH&L use to provide global coverage but the final say often went to either a telephone bidder or a buyer in the room. An oriental piece with copper red decoration attracted attention on the telephones and finally fetched £15,500, indicating that the oriental market is still buoyant, though perhaps a little more selective than it has been over the past year or so.

W Hammer prices in each of the sections

over the two day auction were excellent, with a good strike rate of lots selling within each part of the auction. An oil on canvas by John Craxton (1922-2009) of Roman pots excavated from Crichell Down, sold for £15,000, while a self- portrait by Robert Lenkiewicz fetched £12,500, indicating the demand for 20th century artists is on the rise in the current market.

hile it may have been a ‘dry’ January for some, it certainly wasn’t a dry spell for the auction

While all other areas of jewellery, silver,

works of art and ceramics continue to have a strong demand with buyers, it was also notable that there has been an upward turn for the demand of period furniture. A George III mahogany secretaire bookcase fetched £5,500, while an 18th century walnut oyster veneered chest on stand brought buyers to the saleroom who fought off telephone bids to eventually buy the piece for £2,700. the strong bidding continued throughout the furniture section with a 19th century walnut card table fetching £3,400 and a Regency circular drum top library table reached £3,300. the strong bidding over the two day

Fine Art auction and the demand across the market generally has also been noticeable within the bidding in the regular Antiques & Interiors auctions. As we finally move in to spring and a few rays of sunshine are appearing, the auction market appears to have a brighter future ahead this year, with a number of specialist and niche auctions to come at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood.
