Fidessa Group, the Woking- based company that provides software and services such as trading systems to clients in the financial services sector, was the biggest share price climber (up 21%) among major Thames Valley businesses during February.
The company not only announced increased revenues of 7% to £295.5 million last year, but also won a compliance accolade and a trading platform award for innovation.
Chief executive Chris Aspinwall said: "During 2015, while financial markets remained volatile, we saw a continued improvement in our end markets as they entered a new phase of the recovery, with structural and regulatory changes starting to have an impact. These improvements have resulted in new opportunities and high levels of new business activity.”
Another headline performance came from the Denham-based InterContinental Hotels Group, which also announced strong results in 2015 as well as new Holiday Inn openings in Bulgaria, Newfoundland and Thailand.
Chief executive Richard Solomons said: “Our strong momentum in 2015 was driven by a clear strategy and disciplined execution. We delivered our highest room openings since 2009, our best signings since 2008, 11% underlying profit growth and 19% underlying EPS growth.”
One of the largest share price hikes was by IS Solutions, the Sunbury-on-Thames company that is engaged in the distribution, design, installation and support of computer hardware and software. Its shares soared 37% in the month.

The road to being an HWYE finalist
Mark Rose, one of 2015’s Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalists, shared some insights into how he made a success of his business, Boosh 365, based in Fleet, Hants

Boosh 365 wasn’t Rose’s first business, and he has learnt plenty along the way. In 2006 he set up Catch Telecom with a colleague he’d met working for a telecoms
firm.The business worked but Rose wanted to take what he’d learnt and start up on his own. In 2012 he launched Boosh 365.
Rose recalls: “The telecoms industry was really buzzing with new tech but, while the products were exciting, I wondered how much they benefited the customer. My vision was to answer the questions ‘Why should we choose this telecoms system – what will it do for me, my business and my customers?’, rather than to sell a product just because it’s available. Our Boosh 365 motto is ‘Helping the world communicate better’.”
Rose’s tips are:
• Try new things; when I started out I presumed I had to run my business like every other UK telecoms firm. Being different gives you competitive edge.
• Treat staff the same way you would expect to be treated and usually it pays off. If someone isn’t right for your business you can’t keep them; it’s not fair on you or the employee concerned.
• To grow, borrow money to stop cashflow holding you back. Consider funding from banks, crowdfunding etc.
• Have clear goals and ensure the whole company embraces them.

• Get ‘work/life’ integration – enjoy life outside work.
Rose is a big believer in ‘You get back what you put in’. He says: “This starts with hard graft and I’ve built a team around me who work as much as me. We also believe in the concept of ‘giving back’ in terms of corporate social responsibility and donate old mobile phones, telephone systems etc. to charities.“
He concludes: “I’m lucky in that our local area is great for our business, although I would like to see more recognition nationally for small businesses. Awards like the HWYE help and being a finalist was a great experience.”
