Plenty can be found at the Central Market. Bustling, cobblestone streets of St. Helier. Farmer’s market à la Français.

Looking out from St. Helier you can see the yacht marina and beyond this, Elizabeth Castle, which has defended the island for more than 300 years. Te castle is accessible at both low and high tide, although it is quite a walk at low tide. At high tide you can take a castle duck. Work started on the castle in 1594, it was finally named and opened in 1600 by the then Governor of Jersey, Sir Wal- ter Raleigh. (Yes, the very man who laid down his coat so the Queen wouldn’t soil her shoes, and the same man she ordered have his head cut off. But that is a story for another day.) Another building of note is the States Chamber building. It originally opened on the 21st of June, 1887, to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s ac- cession to the throne of England. An in- teresting factoid, the Jersey Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1768 making it the oldest English speaking Chamber in the world. “save species from extinction” and defi- nitely worth a visit. Visitors can spend the day wandering through the grounds, taking in all that the Trust has to offer. Te animals, surrounding plants and gar- dens are quite simply put, breathtaking. After a busy day why not enjoy an eve- ning out in one of the 347 restaurants the island has to offer. From Michelin star restaurants to fish and chips at the corner, all the food is fresh and divine. And with so many wonderful views, you can plan on looking out on the ocean from a sunrise at breakfast to a lovely dinner sunset. If you have moved away from your

birthplace and not returned in 10 or more years, perhaps you should revisit your ancestral home. You may see what I see, change sure, but also beauty. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but Jersey simply is beautiful. So if you have a spare weekend or a week with nothing planned, pop on over to Jersey and take in my homeland on the beautiful Chan- nel Islands.
