“This is a fabulous honour. There is so much work being currently undertaken within
community pharmacy in Northern Ireland and so to receive an Award for what we do as a team is the icing on the cake. This is truly a great reflection on the amazing staff I have and the fantastic community in Portglenonne”
also a part-time lecturer on Complementary Medicine at the pharmacy undergraduate course at the University of Ulster, Coleraine.
He has delivered workshops at the UCA Pre-registration Program on maximizing MURs (see supporting evidence PowerPoint). As ICP elected pharmacist for Antrim/Ballymena, he is committed to facilitating the implementation of the new role that pharmacy has within integrated healthcare.
“We are passionate about improving the health of the general public and facilitating the new Transforming your Care patient centred, holistic shift left paradigm in healthcare,” he says.
“We realise that for all their life saving benefits, we need to also look beyond medicines to improve the quality of life of all our patients and especially those with long term conditions, many of which are caused or worsened by modifiable lifestyle choices.
“Our team involvement in PGH! And the annual BL fundraiser has helped consolidate Bannside Pharmacy as somewhere in the local community that can assist people in living healthier, happier lives by helping
address or prevent some of the causes of poor physical and emotional health.
“The initiative also shows potential for helping type 2 diabetics better manage their condition as evidenced by the changes in HBA1c experienced by the two type 2 diabetics measured at 3-4 months after the programme finished. The nutritional guidance sheet issued at the end of the programme - which resonated with the advice given during it - was compiled by Dr David Unwin, an English GP who has made a big difference to glycaemic control in his diabetic patients.
“Managing the extra workload with 100 participants in the intensive 12-week PGH! programme, would not have been possible without excellent teamwork.”
The evaluation forms returned from PGH! evidenced the benefits that this type of programme delivers for the physical and emotional wellbeing of the participants and how positive the participants felt about their interaction with the Bannside Pharmacy team.
The pharmacy team lead by example with Ryan and Shauna regularly taking part in fundraising and health awareness activities. Both of them keep fit and active and on 10th October climbed Slieve Donard for
Aware Defeat Depression. Bernie took up running around 10 years ago in her 40s and has been an inspiration to many customers.
They are also continuously researching how and why lifestyle impacts positively and negatively on health and sharing this information where appropriate with customers and patients and other health professionals.
“We are committed to moving pharmacy forward in a rapidly changing healthcare environment and want to share our learning from PGH!, Biggest Loser and our daily practice to help further develop a programme/service that can be rolled out across community pharmacy in Northern Ireland and further afield,” he adds.
“We wish to share all that our team have learned for the benefit of community pharmacy and more importantly for the benefit of the communities that we serve.”
On accepting the Award he said, “This is a fabulous honour. There is so much work being currently undertaken within community pharmacy in Northern Ireland and so to receive an Award for what we do as a team is the icing on the cake. This is truly a great reflection on the amazing
staff I have and the fantastic community in Portglenonne.
“As a team we really enjoyed the Awards process, which I feel is as important as the Award itself. It made us think about what we do, why we do it, how we do it and how we can do it better. We learned a lot from being involved in that process of self-evaluation and the Award itself is a bonus.”
Colm Magee, Sales Director with Teva UK stated, “At Teva, we liaise with pharmacists and their teams in their work environment and so it is equally important to meet them at a personal level as well.
“This is a tremendous accolade for pharmacy. As we have heard all night, pharmacists and pharmacy teams in Northern Ireland work very hard all year long and often that goes unrecognised. To witness them being rewarded as events such as the Pharmacy in Focus Awards is tremendous for us as a company and we are delighted to be involved.” n
