Health & Social Care: Reform and Transformation Getting the Structures Right
U
CA has responded to the Health Minister’s consultation on reforming the health and social
care structures in Northern Ireland. His announcement late last year to close the Health & Social Care Board was a bold move and he has pledged to encourage innovation in a bid to deliver on Transforming Your Care.
pharmacy with the public and stakeholders.
The meeting focussed on the Choose Well campaign and how pharmacy can get more involved.
In early February I attended SDLP health conference arranged by Fearghal McKinney MLA, health spokesperson for SDLP. Debate on Transforming Your Care and it was a good opportunity to ensure that community pharmacy was represented.
UCA stand at QUB Careers Fair was well visited – the 2nd and 3rd year students remembered me from my presentation on the Pre-Reg placements in Autumn.
Generally students anxious and feeling under pressure about securing their place for 2017/18. Good event to attend on behalf of all members!

Diary of a Representation Pharmacist P
PRB Communications group meeting. Group members engaging with each other to support the promotion of
in terms of delivering training and our new Pharmacist membership. The Belfast meeting was great with over 80 pharmacists attended to hear the talk. More great training events are in the pipeline for 2016.
I’ve been working with a group of employee pharmacists on developing the new UCA Pharmacist membership.
The goal is to ensure that all pharmacists have a voice and are able to contribute to furthering the aims of the profession. We are all very excited to see how this develops.
UCA and its’ charity partner AgeNI are delighted with the support from pharmacies so far for its’ campaigns and representatives from the charity have been talking about their signposting services to pharmacists at UCA Local meetings.
We will be exploring initiatives to roll out in 2016 which will utilise the strength of both organisations and help you improve your engagement with our older population. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know at
mairead@uca.org.uk.

However, the consultation document did not contain any detail of what the new structures would look like in the future. The UCA has stressed that the new system must be less complex and clearer lines of accountability and responsibility must be clearer. Innovation is a key word in this consultation and in its response the UCA encouraged the Minister to stimulate innovation both in terms of commissioning and delivery of services across health & social care. Integrated Care Partnerships have been hailed as a success but have been stifled by the current commissioning process. Development of this integrated approach and ensuring that the patient is placed at the centre when it comes to the commissioning of services is
