THE COSMETIC ASSOCIATION TRADE SHOW 2016

The annual event, The Cosmetic Association Trade Fair is almost upon us.

This year the show will be held in the RDS on May 15 -17th.

In line with the upturn in the economy, this year’s event will not only have long standing members, but a ‘whole lot’ of new members too.

Judging by the brochures seen so far for 2016 products, the colour and variety will be surpassed only by the enhanced displays on each stand.

Companies have travelled far and wide in search of beautiful new gifts and brands to make you forget about budgets.

The new members will bring a wide variety of gifts, and particularly new brands, to the event.

Irish ‘home grown’ brands are increasing in numbers, especially in the skin care sector, and the team are very happy to introduce them to you at the trade fair.

Large numbers are expected to turnout and it is anticipated that all Pharmacy buyers will set aside some time from their schedules to come and personally view the excellent new products.

Because of the large number of stands, perhaps it would be advisable to take two days at the show, to give you time to cover all the exhibitors.

Dates and times are as follows: Sunday 15th, May - 10am - 6pm Monday 16th, May - 9am - 8pm Tuesday 17th, May - 9am - 6pm

A Guide to Support Medication Review in Older People

A local practical guide to support medication review has been developed by the NI Network of Pharmacists with a special interest in Older People.

This guide is aimed at supporting pharmacists in any setting to identify medicines which may be potentially inappropriate for older people and should therefore be reviewed. It gives explicit examples of medicine names/classes and the clinical condition or scenario in which it is considered inappropriate.

The tables include the reasons why and in a few examples, some practical advice how best to stop or amend. The guide also provides a section on medicines which provide benefits to the older person but all too often fail to be prescribed.

The guide has been compiled using a variety of up to date resources and will continue to be developed by the network steering group with the most up to date version available via the pharmacy forum website.

As the population ages and life expectancy increases, a greater number of older people are living with several long-term conditions that are being managed with an increasing number of medicines – ‘polypharmacy’.

Polypharmacy can present many positive benefits for the patient; by alleviating pain, suffering and disability, improving functional capacity, independence, quality of life

and ultimately extending life. However when an increasing number of medicines are prescribed inappropriately their benefits may not be realised and they can have a number of negative effects.

Older people are at considerable risk of experiencing these negative effects; from adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, non-adherence, increased hospital admissions and even mortality.

Maintaining a careful balance becomes more difficult with increasing age and medicine review is one important element of optimising a patient's medicines to ensure they can support their long- term conditions, multi-morbidities and positive polypharmacy.

This guide is aimed at supporting pharmacists when carrying out comprehensive reviews of the appropriateness of medicines prescribed for older people. This document is intended to be used only as a guide.

It is not intended to be a prescriptive document and should not be used in isolation of other relevant up to date resources e.g. NI Formulary, NICE Clinical Guidelines, BNF etc. When carrying out medicines review, patients should be reviewed on an individual basis; using a person-centred approach to reach any decision to change or add a medicine. Decisions should also take account of all relevant clinical information, risks and benefits to the patient.

In June 2014 around one in ten people in Northern Ireland were aged 70 or over with 33,000 people aged 85 or more.

Section one refers to an explicit list of medicines or medicine classes (grouped per BNF section) which should be routinely reviewed in older people in certain circumstances and stopped or amended in some way.

The table also includes the reason why and in a few examples, some practical advice how best to stop or amend. Section two is laid out in a similar format but refers to a list of medicines which may be considered appropriate to commence in older people in certain circumstances.

Before starting a new medicine consideration should be paid to any contra-indications to the drug or if a palliative approach would be more appropriate.
