There are three dates in March that it’s impossible to ignore in Spain, no matter how we try: St. Patrick’s Day, San Jose or Father’s Day and Easter: the Semana Santa. Around the Southern Costa Blanca there are also a few gastronomic events that allow you to enjoy a different taste of Spain such as Almoradi’s V Olla Gastronomy event. You still have time to enjoy this weekend event with different Restaurants offering a specially prepared menu for just 18€. Those participating include: Restaurante Los Infantes on Friday 4th March, Kioske el Paseo on Saturday 5th March and Bar Murciano on Sunday 6th March with the final weekend featuring Restaurante Calle Mayor 91 on Thursday, 10th March, Restaurante Charini on Friday, Bar Casino on Saturday and finishing on Sunday 13th March at Ciudad Deportiva.
Along the coast, Pilar de la Horadada’s celebrates its VI Culinary Easter Fest 2016 (Jornadas Gastronómicas de Semana Santa), an initiative aimed to diversify, enrich and complement the tourist offerings of the town as well as to support its restaurants. The so-called “Sabores de Cuaresma” (Lent flavours) takes place on Fridays or any other day if you make a previous booking. Price: 20€ per person that also includes bread, coffee and a drink. Further information at: Tourist office, Plaza Campoamor, 2, Pilar de la Horadada. Telephone: 966 767 068. Email:

Moving inland to Crevillente their VII Tapas Route takes place until 20th March with 23 cafes, bars and restaurants offering a choice of two tapas for 1.50€ plus a beer or a glass of wine for 1.20€. Heading south of the border down Cartagena way, they have their very popular IX Tapas Route and the V Ruta del Asiático through to 13th March. A tapa and a drink is just 2.50€ from any of the 73 participating bars, cafes and restaurants with Asiatico prices varying per venue.
Still hungry? Then make your way to Orihuela City where they are having a Food Truck Street Market. It takes place on Friday 11th March from 6pm until midnight, on Saturday from 12 noon to midnight and on Sunday 13th March from 12 noon to 6pm. The trucks are parked up in Glorieta Gabriel Miró offering gourmet gastronomy along with street music and entertainment. This same weekend you can step back in time at Villena’s XV Medieval Market that features over 160 stalls and taverns in the Barrio del Rabal area. The market opens on Friday from 7pm to 10pm, Saturday from 9am to 2pm and then from 5pm to 11pm and finally on Sunday 13th March with the same hours as Saturday but closing an hour earlier that evening at 10pm.
On March 17th, Cabo Roig is turning green for St. Patrick’s Day and hosting a fabulous parade and party to celebrate Ireland´s national saint. bouncy castles, dancers, music and a display of classic and specialist cars and bikes, along with St. Patrick himself. This will be a fun day with something for all the family with loads of prizes and giveaways. Torrevieja is just one of the local cities that celebrate the Easter Processions with style. The event is classified as of National Interest and is supported by the Costa Blanca Tourism Board. The main parades take place on Monday 21st, starting at 10pm and on Good Friday starting at 8pm, although there are parades and activities every day. There are also major parades in Pilar de La Horadada, Orihuela and Elche, to name but a few.
In Torrevieja, once again the 100+ members of the International Cofradia Of Jesus In The Garden Of Olives will be taking part. This prestigious group has been followed by the media across the Spanish speaking world and has been much admired and respected by most of its Spanish counterparts since its inception in 2005. With thousands of Spanish and many other nationalities filling the streets of Torrevieja for these splendid processions, the atmosphere is something to behold, especially for those who are lucky enough to be a part of this moving Spanish tradition. Torrevieja has a brand new film and cultural club. Thanks to a collaboration with Cines IMF in Torrevieja, located beside Habaneras Shopping Centre in the Ozone Centre, every week a brand new film shows, once a night, for all seven nights, in English language with Spanish subtitles, called: V.O.S.E. No need for headphones. It costs 5€ on Monday and Wednesday and 7€ every other night and Fiestas. However film club members receive many benifits. Everyone can find out what is showing each week by sending an email to:
film@admitone.club with the words ‘Opt In’ on the subject line. Check out
