THEHOWS&
“The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are op- pressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel…Bless the Lord, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the Lord, O my soul.”
– Psalm 103:6-7 & 22
There is a well-known saying in the secular world that says the man who knows “how” will always have a job, but the man who knows “why” will al- ways be his boss.
The word in Psalm 103:7 for “way” is a Hebrew word meaning “a trodden road” or, figuratively, “a course of life.” God was not showing Moses a won- der over here followed by a miracle over there, but a deliberate path for Is- rael to follow. The majority of the nation was into “spectacles.” They enjoyed the parting of the Red Sea, the sound and the fury at Sinai and the spectacle of the Shekinah, but they were not “into” a long-term plan. Strategy was not their thing.
Funny enough, people haven’t changed much from the time of Moses. One of the laments of our current candidates for presidential office is that the media isn’t interested in actual political issues; they instead prefer pro- moting sound bites and fights. The issues take a backseat to the “show” – and the show must go on.
Several years ago, I knew a man who was into politics at the local level. Suddenly, his precinct was invaded by young Christians who took over on the basis of strength in numbers. The old hands in the district were con- cerned, but my friend told them, “Relax, because they won’t stay the course. They’ll lose interest and leave, and then we’ll be back to business as usual.” And he was right.
It takes conviction and character to stick with a plan. If the only thing we are interested in is “following the moving of the waters,” we’ll end up being ineffective, spiritual gypsies running from pillar to post. But if we know what we are doing and why we are doing it, we become effective workers in the Kingdom of God and our efforts result in dominion, not just an isolated out- post of witness here and there. We become effective servants who see a great harvest, for “God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall hear him.” (Psalm 67:7)
