Devotional Thoughts...

by Ace Collins

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” — Jeremiah 29:11

Herman Hupfeld is not a man much remembered today. In fact, even in the 1920’s and 1930’s, when he penned several songs for Broadway musicals, Hupfeld was often dismissed as just another run-of-the-mill tunesmith. Yet, one of his minor hits from 1931, “As Time Goes By”, would be rediscovered a decade later and provide the musical anchor for one of the greatest movies in history.

In Casablanca, the character of Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart, was a cynic. His life was his own, and he saw no reason to do any- thing noble with it. For Rick, “As Time Goes By” symbolized the most wonderful moment of his life as well as his most tragic loss. When Rick heard the line “You must remember this…” the memo- ries became so profound he went to pieces. And yet as time went by, Rick changed his cynical tune and was willing to sacrifice everything for the woman he loved and the country he’d left be- hind.

When Paul was in prison, he wrote to his friends that he had never been happier. He was sure that God had a plan for his life and had put him into a place where he could best serve. Like Paul, we must remember the lessons Jesus taught through His stories and His life. And we should realize that, even when things are seemingly working against us, God has a promise and a plan for our lives.

Like Herman Hupfeld, who once felt his contributions to music had been all for naught, we are often lost about God’s plan for our lives. But if we do our best at this moment, forget living selfishly and live for others, “as time goes by” our lives will have great value to not just ourselves, but to others.
