Buddy Miller & Friends Cayamo Sessions at Sea (New West) (Release date Janu- ary 29) I have been a

Buddy Miller fan for

years, and this new release finds the song- writing great at the helm of a superstar jam session. Recorded onboard the Cayamo Cruise -a couple of them actually, it is album filled with the talents of some of Americana’s finest artists performing some of country and gospel’s best loved tunes. Recorded live in the onboard Bliss Lounge, the feeling that comes through is a “loose and live in studio” record- ing, featuring the stars who were booked on the cruise jamming in an intimate, relaxed environment. Truthfully, I put this CD on and found myself grinning from ear to ear, singing along and tapping my feet on the floor. Lucinda Williams does a heartfelt and won-

derful cover of the great Gram Parsons’ “Hickory Wing,” and Buddy Miller joins Nikki Lane to cover the Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton hit “Just Someone I Used to Know.” Classic country rocks! Kacey Musgraves,l one of our current favorite country artists, nails the Buck Owens classic “Love’s Gonna Live Here Again, and the CD’s opening track, “After The Fire is Gone,” with Lee Ann Wom- ack had me at hello. That cut really takes me back to my earliest memories of starting out as a country and gospel DJ. Kris Kristofferson recreates his immortal

“Sunday Morning Coming Down,” and Richard Thompson, another of our favorite

singer-songwriters, covers “Wedding Bells” to great effect. “Shawn Colvin” sings the Stones’ “Wild Horses” with passion, and Brandi Carlisle duets with Lone Bellow on John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery.” Their ver- sion rivals earlier covers by Bonine Raitt and Susan Tedeschi. (Of course, all of the versions rock. It’s a great song.) Rounding out this fine volume are Elizabeth Cook with “If Teardrops were Pennies,” Doug Seegers doing “Take The Hand of Jesus,” and Jill Andrews singing “Come Early Mornin.’” To be totally honest, I haven’t loved an

Americana compilation this much since O Brother, Where Art Thou? They say it’s all about the song, and I believe that. But it also helps to have folks like Buddy, Lucinda, Kris and all the rest performing those songs.
