WINE

by Michael Buffalo Smith

gion of Vino Verde, northwest of Portugal, Es- pigueiro is a very crisp white wine that simply sprarkles. Made with a perfectly balance blend of the indigenous grapes of the region, Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadura, it is a medium-dry wine. Similar in many ways to the Quinta re-

viewed above, it doesn’t quite measure up to it, but is very close. If you just can’t find the Quinta, this one will be the second best thing. Pairs well with seafood, fish or Italian

dishes. Four and One Half Stars.

Quinta do Estanho Porto Special Reserve White Portugal When I was allowed to taste this fine wine

during a visit to Joe’s Place (Book Store and Wine Bar, Greenville, SC), I fell in love. From the initial aroma that wafted upward from the glass to my first sip, I knew I had come a mighty long was since my Boone’s Farm swill- ing days of the early 1970’s. By far one of the finest wines I have ever tasted, I am amazed that it sells for just around $28 a bottle. Quinta do Estanho is a crisp, medium to

dry white wine with a fruity taste and an aroma and taste that lingers on the tongue even after the finish. Pairs well with pasta dishes, but honestly,

it pairs best with a second glass of Quinta. Five Big Stars.

Carmen Stevens Angel’s Reserve Western Cape of South Africa Chenin Blanc 2014 Carmen was the first black woman to grad-

uate in winemaking in South Africa. She works for a super-premium, American- owned, mega award-winning winery in South Africa, and her wines are proof that Stevens knows what it takes to create a good glass of wine. The Chenin Blanc boasts fairly rich honeyed flavors with yeasty/buttery touches, full-bodied and rounded. A nice Chenin. Artistic Aside: The label is adorned with a painting of a tiger, created by Carmen’s daughter. Four and One Half Stars
