to sing along. It was great hearing Billy again. The country hit maker had been absent from the last few Angelus events that I attended, though he did sing one at The 40th Anniver- sary Volunteer Jam earlier in the year. He’s a great guy, with a great voice, and a great sup- porter of the Angelus. The guys provided very impressive backing

for Charlie to sing “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” and “Long Haired Country Boy,” and then Charlie stepped up to the mike and said,”I think I’ve got one more in me. I’m old and I need to go to bed!” Everyone laughed. It wasn’t hard to guess what song he would end with, the CDB’s biggest seller of all, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” I later asked Scott, “reckon how many times Charlie has performed that song live?” I’d seriously love to know. Surely a lot of times since he played it in the movie Urban Cowboy! The Embry Brothers were dead on it, hittin’ the note per- fectly, as our friend Carolyn Corlew danced and sang. She is so important to the CDB, and has been their backup singer for many great years. Carolyn spied me on the front row and waved. I had not seen her in quite a while. Just a very nice, talented girl. The “Devil” kept rocking, and Charlie

threw the drummer, Terry a curve ball. Char- lie got face to face with each member during the jam, challenging them -fiddle against gui- tar, bass, keys and finally drums. Daniels was having a ball, playing funky fiddle licks, each or which was answered by Terry on drums, as he grinned from ear to ear. Give the drummer some! It was awesome. Charlie left the stage and left the building. I

knew this would be only the first of several performances I would be seeing over the weekend, and I was ready for more. The Embry’s brought out another special

guest, Del Gray, drummer for Little Texas. They rocked it on “God Bless Texas” and an- other of LT’s hits. So good. The guys did a few more, and then there was a jam with Billy Dean and Carolyn Corlew and all sorts of tal-

ent onstage. I had stepped outside to the patio where the hospitality room is these days, and was talking to Terry about his drumming, meeting and greeting friends old and new and having great fun. I was happy to see my old buddy Guy Gilchrist, a world class cartoonist and singer/songwriter, who does tons of great stuff for the Angelus. Normally, I would go on to talk about the

rest of the weekend, all the great sets by the bands, all the fun hanging out with friends, playing my other shows including an hour set at the opening of the banquet, and the big closing concert at the Dallas Bull. Sadly, I cannot comment this year, because of the aforementioned “trip without luggage” that I took. But judging from the photos and com- ments on Facebook, the entire event was a rousing success and good time. I had no doubt. Tammy and the rest always do it up right. Good music, good friends and good times, helping those in need. Ain’t that what it’s all about anyway? •
