11. Midwinter red berry and holly garland, £40, from John Lewis, details as before

Rather than using all your decorations on the tree this year, why not opt for something a little different and attach them with short lengths of wire to a large fresh or artifi cial wreath? It’s easy to do and looks great indoors, or in a sheltered porch. Alternatively, in a minimalist setting, we love the way the Sainsbury’s decorations shown left [10] are displayed in the outline of a Christmas tree marked out in red and white parcel string – a great way to jazz up a plain white wall.

Happy holiday

If you’ve got guests coming to stay over the holiday, it’s a lovely idea to spread festive cheer right through the house and even into their bedrooms – a tiny tree on the bedside table, a festive garland strung across the wall and some Christmassy bedlinen will get them into the spirit straightaway!
