many wonderful things. It’s likea musical Howard Fenster.

Yeah, it is! That’s a good way of putting it. And it did transfer to you. I was talk- ing to a friend the other day and I in- troduced another friend to your music on a road trip – and I was playing this stuff, “800 Pound Jesus.” All those songs - they’re not gospel but they have the same message. It’s still a very posi- tive thing that comes through in a lot of the songs you write. And I think that’s a special gift. It comes from your up- bringing. It gets a positive message across without being one of these gospel singers that you were talking about earlier, that I don’t really like that much. I’d rather hear it like that, rather than having it forced down my throat. That’s what she said …

You kind of cut out on that - censored yourself – your cell phone cut out on you so all I heard was .. (Both laughing) I couldn’t help it. You gave me that one – I had to take it.

…and I’m proud of you for that too.

That’s three points that you got so far. I’ve only got one. …uh.. Another thing that comes across a lot in your music is food.. turnip greens, biscuits, corn bread, sweet iced tea, and pie. All these things that just make me grin thinking about growing up in the South and all the types of food that you mention. Do you make a conscious effort to just write a lot about food or does it just happen that way? Yeah, it just happens that way. You know, who don’t like food? There’s certain kinds of

food that are unique to my region, you know biscuits, southern stuff, turnip greens, black eyed peas and corn bread – that’s Southern food. People like to hear about it in a song.

Especially when it’s a double entendre, you talking about getting your biscuit buttered. Isn’t that the truth? It’s a song that has a lot of sexual undertones in it.

That Short Street Package Store – live record. That was actually the second or third Paul Thorn album I owned and it tickles me how you’ll play and laugh at the stuff – you’re the performer nd the audience. I love that… I wanted to tell everyone there’s cruise coming up called the Outlaw Country Cruise in February. It’s got you on it, and Black- berry Smoke who I just saw at Volun- teer Jam Sunday night. Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle… what’s your thoughts on you getting booked on an Outlaw Country Cruise because you don’t strike me as either Outlaw or Country. But I’m happy you’re there. But how in the world did that happen? Are you going to do anything special like dress in a leather jacket, or wear dark glasses or anything? No, I’m gonna do what I do. But to answer your question, I’m not sure you’re aware of this, but I’m pretty heavy rotation on the Out- law Country Radio Station.

Oh, XM and all that – or Sirius. Yeah, I’m all over that. I’ve been doing the Delbert McClinton cruise for years, but I’m not doing that anymore for reasons I will not discuss, but I’m doing the Cayman Cruise, which is already sold out - that’s John Prine and Lucinda and all them, and then I’m doing the Outlaw cruise too. What does that even
