Female Focus Get ready for the wet!

OK, we know that it doesn’t rain often in the Costa Blanca, but when it does – it really does! And this has an impact not only on your safety but also the well being of your car. We’ve already had one serious downpour and apparently there’s a good chance of a dreaded ‘gota fria’!

But of course, as always, safety first. We’ve mentioned making sure your tyres are in good shape. The obvious is, do you have enough tread? – we can’t stress this enough. Interestingly, we also get quizzed on why there’s such a difference in price between budget tyres and the price of well known brands which we fit. Put simply, you pay for what you get. Quality tyres will usually last longer, and may even be grippier! But surely a tyre is a tyre? No! It all comes down to the construction and the rubber compound. If you follow Formula 1 you’ll know just how much difference the rubber compound makes.

So let’s assume you’ve fitted quality tyres and they’re not worn, what else do you need to be careful about when driving too fast in deep water. Firstly it isn’t safe. You can easily aquaplane and if the water is more than a few centimetres, there may be hidden dangers. The other damage is waterlogging your engine. Whilst it’s rare, we have seen more than one occasion where water has entered the piston chamber and totally wrecked the crankshaft. Water is not compressible so any water in the piston chamber is going to cause a problem. Our advice is always to drive slowly – slower than you think – and if in doubt find another route.

If you’re in any doubt about your safety, tyres, wipers, in fact anything, come and see us at Larry’s and we’ll put you on the road to safe driving.
