www.charlesworthgardens.com Adding colour to your life.

At this time of year the garden does require a good prune through, make sure your tools are sharp and well oiled. Another big tip for those of you who may cut back your palm branches, after every individual palm, quickly sterilise your tools, this can be done with any normal disinfectant or bleach etc. then give them a rinse. I say this as I do from time to time see people passing on a fungus between their palm trees with infected tools, and the fungus is pretty much untreatable and will destroy your palm.

Any way back to topic, don’t forget to give your trees a prune to help thin them out as we often get higher winds at this time of year and with a bout of rain it can be enough to uproot many trees.

With the garden thinned back and most flowers cut off, the garden can look a little plain. This is the ideal time to exploit your pots and make them as colourful as possible. I like to make my pots up with a more sturdy full time plant (which doesn’t mind being in a pot) with lots of colour, but you can fill them however you like and that’s the point. If you call into your local garden centre they will always have a selection of plants that are in season and so make the most of these. They are in season as this is their time of year to shine, so like in season fruit or veg make the most of what is available and give your pots a good zing.

Most of these plants will only be seasonal and therefore not last forever but they don’t normally cost a lot and it gives you a chance to refresh them and keep your pots looking exciting and fresh.

Don’t just think colour. Another exciting way of filling you pots is by using herbs, these can be used to add smell as well as colour, you can be as imaginative as you like.

The best way to build up a pot is have a good strong central plant, and then add your smaller plants around that. Have a go and send me some pictures. If you need any help sourcing pots just drop us an email we have a wide selection of pots available to order.

Always make the most of your garden space and remember the brilliant impact gardens have on your whole home. Until next time, enjoy your garden.
