REGATTA 2015

Things to See & do at Dartmouth Regatta O

Dartmouth Regatta is a huge event for the town. Here Peter Johnson, Secretary of the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta tells us a bit about what’s coming up in this year’s packed programme.

ne of the most popular events in the South West is the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, held every year in the last week of August.

the regatta has grown to be a major attraction for the many thousands of people who flock to Dartmouth and is a major contributor to the local economy. this 2015 regatta promises to be bigger and better than ever and takes place between saturday 22nd August and saturday 29th August. Although there are many activities

and attractions during regatta week, it has at its heart the sailing and rowing competitions that have been celebrated since the first recorded event in 1822. the combined efforts of the Dartmouth Amateur rowing Club and the West of england Amateur rowing Club now means that some 250 crews compete in one of the highest rated events in the rowing calendar on one of the most beautiful settings, the river Dart. three local clubs, the royal

Dartmouth Yacht Club, Dartmouth Yacht Club and Dittisham sailing Club are responsible for the Regatta Sailing Week. this will feature some spectacular events in start bay and on the river and for this year, there will be around 300 boats competing in almost 50 races from dinghies to hi-tech sports boats. Although rowing and sailing play a major role in the

regatta there are other well established sporting events. Athletics first became part of the regatta in 1937 and survives to this day in the form of the Dartmouth Regatta Road Race. this is run over a testing 5 mile course on the final day of the regatta but there are also fun runs for children and young adults. Other sporting events include

swimming, water polo, tennis, golf, darts and tug of war. Altogether some 2500 people compete in the sporting programme which makes the regatta one of the biggest participant’s events in the area. there are also fun events such crab fishing, trolley racing and waiters and waitresses races. Full details on how to enter any of these events are available on the regatta website www. dartmouthregatta.co.uk the entertainment programme is a very important part of the regatta and the marquee on Coronation park will provide some great evenings. A new event, Regatta Jazz, kicks things off on sunday 23rd August with the fabulous Jacqui Dankworth supported by local band James Harris’s beatbelt. the family

orientated barn dance, known as the Regatta Shindig, is on monday 24th August and the

prestigious Regatta Ball, featuring the syd Lawrence Orchestra, is on the 25th. Regatta Rock, headlined by the Dominos, is on Wednesday 26th. there

will also be an excellent week of entertainment on the Bandstand in the royal Avenue gardens. the marquee is also the venue for the hugely popular

Shopping Village with many local craft stores and delicious food to take home. the shopping Village is in the marquee from thursday 27th August to saturday 29th and the vibrant Street Market on the north embankment will be in operation and throughout the week. many excellent stalls can also be found in the royal Avenue gardens and around the boatfloat between Wednesday and saturday.
