DART NOTES

OWn A bOAt On tHe rIVer? DO YOU OWN A BOAT ON THE RIVER BUT ARE NOT A MEMBER OF A LOCAL YACHT CLUB? The Dart Leisure Boat Owners Association (DLBOA) was formed to represent the views of berth holders on the River Dart who do not belong to one of the sailing clubs. It is a member of the Association of River Dart Users Club (ARDUC) which is a stakeholders group recognised by the Dart Harbour Navigation Authority. It is a democratic organisation which has free membership. The only qualification for membership is that you must have a berth on the river Dart. “The value of our association is that it can take up mat- ters on behalf of members and put forward views that are representative of the majority. Conversely the authority can take soundings through the association and get members’ feedback. The whole process is transparent and accountable.” Application forms for membership can found on their website at DLBOA.co.uk

A GREAT MANY FRIENDS OF BY THE DART HAVE BOOKS OUT THIS SUMMER. Joslin Fiennes (see interview in our May 2013 issue) author of ‘Dartmouth - An Enchanted Place” has a new book out at the end of this month - the Origins of english surnames (Robert Hale Ltd) This book explores the medieval origins of surnames in England, looking at occupational names, locational names, nicknames and personal names, names from the continent and symbolic names. In doing so it

offers a unique insight into the way medieval Englishmen lived their life: what they did for a living, where they travelled to, and gives clues to the nature of their culture and memories. Retired (!) local book publisher, richard Webb, has been enticed back with the publication last month of my Devonshire Year (Richard Webb Books). An illustrated Journal of the Jurassic Coast and Countryside, it was originally written and painted to celebrate the beauty of Devonshire. When the author, margaret I. pogson feared she would have to move away and lose her beloved West Country home, she decided to write this journal as a permanent record of her love of Devon. She captured a whole year in words and pictures and it eventually took her six years to complete the detailed work. The Journal remained hidden for 30 years. As the delicate watercolours had been concealed for decades

they were as fresh today as the day they were painted. See www. mydevonshireyear.com for more information. Readers may remember that Richard found great success in

the ‘70s and ‘80s with the publication of ‘The Country Diary of An Edwardian Lady’ and no doubt that memory prompted this new project. Finally, By The Dart’s own contributor, rowena Kitchen who has been writing her unique and popular Health & Beauty column for this magazine for over 60 issues has now had her first novel published - Dress Code red - “Meet the five fabulous party planners who are the darlings of society and all that is cool. ‘It’s All in the Name’ turn your party from drab to fab. And if there happens to be murder or two along the way it’s nothing the girls

Sloane is planning parties with her four best friends so she should be in total and utter heaven as most of their clients

have limitless budgets and limited imaginations allowing the girls to create some pretty wonderful events. Suddenly

someone is out to ruin their reputation and even better see them dead. Scrabbling to keep ahead of the mayhem means some quick thinking from the fabulous fi ve. The threats begin to get really scary and really real when they are

confronted with a murder. Where will it all end? Will the girls ever be able to look at a cupcake ever again?

Planning a party does not necessarily mean everything will go to plan.

As far as Lola knew she had not put murder on the menu for this fabulous summer party.

Doing what you love for a living should make each day a joy so why are the girls running scared?

Some say doing everything in high heels is more of a challenge...we say, bring it on!
