the paths of the Tree of Life – so that it can function in the world of form. So, looking at these secrets of the Major Arcana and taking
the Fool Card as representing the soul of the person, the Major Arcana can be then split into three rows of seven: The first row represents the psychological lessons and
archetypes integrated in the years from birth to adolescence: Magician, High Priestess, Empress, Emperor, Heirophant, Lovers and Chariot. The next seven represent the lessons from adolescence
to adulthood: Strength, Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, Hanged Man, Death, Temperance The final seven are the very difficult lessons learnt in the
gaining of wisdom: Devil, Tower, Star, Moon, Sun, Judgement, World Of course this is the ideal, the plan, but given that every soul
has freewill, we don’t do these lessons in order and we don’t all learn them in one lifetime. In fact some people won’t progress past the archetypes of the first row of seven. According to Kabbalah we will reincarnate to complete what we need to learn. The final card of the journey through the Major Arcana shows
us as the figure of wholeness – the hermaphrodite within the laurel wreath of triumph holding the wands of power. This explains Jung’s theory about the Persona – the mask that we wear through our lives hiding our true selves – “a compromise between individuals and society” and how we move through the process of individuation to free the real Self. “It is precisely the best and strongest among men, the
heroes, who give way to their regressive nostalgia and purposely expose themselves to the danger of being devoured by the monstrous primal cause. But if a man is a hero, he is a hero because, in the final reckoning, he did not let the monster devour him, but subdued it.” [Jung’s Two Essays on Analytical Psychology] n

Secrets of the Tarot
The Tarot is something much, much more than a predictive tool. This is another way to understand ourselves, the working of our unconscious processes and therefore too, a way of self-development and psychological awareness.
Though it was not a direct focus of his energies, Jung recognised Tarot as depicting archetypes of transformation like those he had found in myths, dreams and alchemy, and as having divinatory characteristics similar to the I-Ching and astrology.
