On a recent WME mission trip to Kenya, it was such an honor and blessing to meet Peggy. Her story of struggle and success while dealing with life’s twists and turns is remarkable, moving and nothing short of a miracle. For years Peggy has been helped by WME, and without that help it is doubtful she and her brother would have grown to adulthood, much less be on the threshold of achieving some very re- markable things in their lives.
Peggy grew up in abject poverty in Nairobi. Before her teens, her parents died of HIV/AIDS, leaving her an orphan. She and her younger brother were taken in by family mem- bers, but they never had anything resembling a normal family life. Peggy lived in a tiny house with nine children who were left alone to tend to each other's needs. Adult supervi- sion was rare. Essentially, the children raised themselves. And the person guiding them each step of the way, who is still there for them today, was Peggy.
To provide for the children, Peggy takes bridal pictures. One young relative who does not have a job often gets mad and verbally abuses Peggy because there is not always enough to share equally among the children. Thus, with so many mouths to feed and so many to care for, there is chaos constantly reigning down on her life.
