credible grounds of Karen Blixen’s home before making a trip to see the WME schools located in Kibera-Soweto and Emuruadikir. I found the beauty of Karen’s farm to be very much in contrast with the landscape and challenges that face much of Kenya today. That would be made very clear as we discovered first-hand both the natural beauty and the spiritual challenges in the land as we visited the respective WME schools.
KIBERA-SOWETO WME of Kenya's Blessed Academy at Kibera is situ- ated in what is believed to be the largest slum in the world. The poor, the hungry and the marginalized are a mass of people tightly crammed to- gether and in much need of help. But it was right in the midst of these bleak condi- tions where we experienced a ray of hope.
At the school, we were met by the beautiful smiles of nearly 300 children. They were dressed in their colorful uniforms and were joyfully singing an original “Welcome” song for us. Their radiant smiles are attributed to the Good News of Jesus Christ and the WME school. These children (ranging from 1st to 8th grades) are being given the opportunity to receive an education that can lift them out of the squalor of poverty, hopelessness and despair. We met with some children who have passed National exams that will allow them the chance to go to High School. Praise God! They have crossed a huge hurdle. But they still face challenges as the children of families who, on a moment’s notice, can be displaced due to an unstable slum environment, poor living conditions and rampant crime. Please pray for God’s favor and protection for the children of Kibera-Soweto.
EMURUADIKIR WME of Kenya’s Emuruadikir Primary School is located a few hours by vehicle outside Nairobi. Emuruadikir is Maasai country! The Maasai have one of the longest histories in Kenya. They are the most respected (and feared) of tribes and are known as fierce, native warriors. Continuing a century’s old tradition, they still hunt with spears.
