tarting a business is huge step for most with an un-nerving fear of the unknown. Growing a business
is a further tough call, requiring perseverance, leadership skills - and a lot of critical and, importantly, creative thinking.
For Richard Grahame and Ron Badger, owners of Willow Health Care however it was a necessity, bourne out of a combined desire to bring their community pharmacy into the future, expanding their services to the local population and offering an enhanced experience to all customers.
Willow Health Care serves the communities of Falkirk, Jedburgh and Roslin and through their store, Callendar Pharmacy, understands the importance of providing excellent prescription services as well as first class information, advice and education on health matters to their customers.
Having achieved substantial growth year-on-year from the purchase and fitting out of their pharmacy in Falkirk four years ago, the duo realised the only way to continue their expansion was through the relocation to larger premises. They enlisted the services of Retail Design Consultants Shopfitters
and began their first steps into the next phase.
winning combinations This has proven to be a winning combination of Richard and Ron’s dedication to development and RDC’s ability to surpass their expectations in achieving the ultimate pharmacy from their site.
They looked at several potential sites and the new premises they finally chose had the potential benefits of a High Street location, which was large enough to build in future growth.
The site was in the heart of a Heritage Conservation area, had split floor levels and potential problems in meeting current Building Regulations. Richard and Ron knew what they wanted to achieve and realised this would not be a simple refit project.
They made a call to their contact at RDC, who had worked with them on fitting out their three existing pharmacies. From the initial meeting on this project with RDC, the team realised that they would develop this project into something special.
With three pharmacies to run while this development was taking place
there were constraints on their time; they did not have an unlimited budget and a tight time frame to work within.
As RDC took on the project in its entirety, with Richard and Ron consulted at all times and kept completely informed of all aspects of the project, design meetings took place to ensure the development would exceed their expectations of both the look and functionality of the pharmacy.
RDC Shopfitters held initial meetings with the Planning Department and Building Control, making sure that when the respective formal applications were made there would be no delay in achieving the necessary permissions.
The exterior shop front presence now occupied on the High Street is visually stunning, the external design reflecting the original 1930’s Art Deco style the Planning Department were so keen to bring back to the building.
Internally when entering, the stainless steel and glass panelling on the new access to the now single level pharmacy adds a prestige touch while allowing complete vision of the retail pharmacy area.
The inclusion of an easily operated DDA compliant open lift gives access to all. The clean lines and well- presented retail area allows departmental merchandising, which is proving to buck the trend and is showing a growth in retail sales.
developing their market Richard and Ron knew they had a potential market to expand further into disability aids and thus a dedicated department for smaller item display and an area for large item display were incorporated into the design.
52 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST
In the retail area the lighting, colours and finishes, internal graphics and constantly changing information monitors all project the professional image of the 21st century pharmacy.
A dedicated prescription counter incorporates specialist units for the storage of prescriptions to be collected with an adjoining quiet consultation desk. This is the pharmacist’s point of contact with the customer.
A completely private consultation room for supervised dispensing is complemented by a suite of a further two consultation rooms, allowing outside agencies to operate from the premises when required while retaining full consultation facilities for the pharmacists use.
The dispensary is the hub within the pharmacy.
A well planned, ergonomically designed dispensary allows for ensuring an efficient work flow, with a dedicated dosette make up and storage area. Clear sight lines from the dispensary give a commanding view for the pharmacist over the pharmacy while projecting an open accessible professional image to the customers.
The dispensary design also incorporates the future introduction of a dispensing robot which can be integrated into the layout with minimal disruption.
The faith placed by Richard and Ron in RDC Shopfitters was rewarded when all of this was achieved in the tight time frame allowed and exactly on budget. Furthermore, their own personal dedication in offering excellence within community pharmacy was recognised recently at the Scottish Pharmacy Awards as they were presented with the ‘Pharmacy Business Development Award.’ •
