HOW COMMON IS INCONTINENCE? Estimates of the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) in the UK vary widely, due to different definitions, and because many people are simply too embarrassed to admit to having


a problem at all. In Scotland alone, it’s estimated that between 210,000 and 335,000 adults live with some sort of UI problem (5-9% of the adult population). In general, urinary incontinence is two to three times as common in women as in men.1 Prevalence increases with age, with an estimated 46% of women and 34% of men aged over 80 years affected.
