NEWS IN BRIEF
POPULAR CIRENCESTER OPEN AIR POOL TO BE TRANSFORMED Designs have been unveiled for the transformation of a 146-year-old open air swimming pool, with building work set to begin in September.
The committee at Cirencester Open Air Swimming Pool has received planning permission from Cotswold District Council for the overhaul of the popular attraction. It is one of the oldest outdoor pools in the country and was initially created in 1869 for the public’s health and hygiene, but soon became an area for swimming and sunbathing.
After years of working tirelessly to make sure the ageing pool could open each summer season, the committee decided it was now time to modernise the facility. Finding the funding was expected to prove difficult, but late last year, a mystery local benefactor offered to meet half the cost of the project, which is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of pounds.
IPSWICH BROOMHILL POOL SURVEY SHOWS ‘95% BACKING’
More than 95% of people who took part in a consultation into the reopening of an open-air swimming pool were ‘fully supportive’ of the plan, according to leisure charity Fusion Lifestyle.
About 3,300 people took part in its survey about Broomhill Pool in Ipswich which closed in 2002. Fusion has taken over the project to reopen it and said it could make a £1m investment, while the council has pledged £1m.
The charity wants to bring it back to life and said the survey would be used as part of its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to get £2m for the £4m project.

Single Seminar Format A Huge Success For Certikin
On 16 January, Certikin kicked off the New Year with a single combined national Seminar & Showcase event, a format which this year has replaced the three individual day events the company had previously hosted across the country. Held in the country estate setting of Heythrop Park, Enstone in Oxfordshire, approximately 250 professionals from the wet leisure industry attended the amalgamated event which featured talks from Certikin Product Managers and manufacturers plus featured a combined but separate Showcase area which allowed key suppliers to display and explain more about just some of the many products that Certikin distributes in the UK. Managing Director Neil Murray got the morning session underway with presentations made on e-PIPE: Leak–free pipe protection, Harvia Spa Modules, Prozone AOP Water Purification, Aquacomet Pool Enclosures, Rigo Spa Prefabricated Pools & Spas, Dosing from CertiDos/EMEC, Starline Rolldeck Covers, Fluvo X-Jet and Q-line systems and the benefits of Blue Lagoon UV-C Systems.
A stand up buffet style lunch break taken in the product Showcase area allowed attendees the chance to get up close to a number of new products and provided a great opportunity to discuss them and get expert advice from both Certikin’s technical team and directly with the manufacturers, many of which had travelled from across the globe to support the event. The afternoon saw talks on Calorex Product Updates, Bowman Heat Exchangers, Coverstar Automatic Covers, Dolphin Pool Cleaners, Water Testing and Lovibond Products and what’s new
from Caldera.
As with previous events, on the day there was also the opportunity to enter a competition, the first prize of which was a trip for two to Prague and the day was rounded off with the winners being announced, with Principools winning the first prize.
The seminar was followed in the evening by a drinks reception, dinner and entertainment complete with after dinner TV personality speaker. This allowed attendees a chance to let their hair down and network with colleagues from across the industry – more of which will be in the next issue of SPN.

£19.4m Exeter Pool Complex Gets Funding Green Light
A new swimming pool and leisure centre for Exeter has taken a step closer with the approval of £19.4m to cover the cost of the project. The funds were signed off at a meeting of Exeter City Council in mid December and the appointment of a design company is due to be announced soon. Council Leader Pete Edwards said that getting the financial
commitment was a landmark in the delivery of the project. “This is a significant investment from the city council and will give others the confidence to invest in Exeter,” he said.
The business case for a new pool identified a need for a modern, fit-for-purpose swimming provision to meet the
need of casual and competitive swimmers and potentially schools too.
The new facility will replace the ageing Pyramids pool and is scheduled to open in 2018. It will feature a 25-metre, eight- lane pool, a 20-metre, four- lane training pool and a small leisure pool with fun features for children.
