NEWS Benefits Of Media Clear As Glass
Less maintenance and reduced environmental cost is the name of the game in the complete refurbishment of South Ireland’s Leisureland Leisure Centre.

main pool and kids’ pool are serviced by a total of five steel fabricated filters operating with sand media. With a bather load of 250,000 per year (approximately 700 people per day) a new filter media solution was needed to reduce the amount of maintenance and lower the cost of regular media replacement. “As a solution to this problem, we suggested replacing the sand filter media with Waterco EcoPure glass media,” says Tony Fisher, Managing Director of Waterco Europe. “EcoPure Glass media is a high quality recycled glass which is fast becoming the preferred choice of many installers when looking for an alternative to conventional sand. “Tom Wheeler, consultant engineer from Noel Lawlor and Associates, was particularly interested in the cost savings in relation to reduced chemical consumption, heating and backwashing.”
Sean Asple of Pool and Spa Ireland, which designs, installs and services swimming pools, worked with Leisureland on the installation, which included a total quantity of 30 tonnes of Waterco EcoPure Glass Media. Two different grades of media were used – a grade three base layer covered the laterals and one metre bed depth of grade one media was also used. Previously, the sand media system was causing some headaches for the staff at the centre.
“The media was getting old, and delivering pretty poor filtration, as the media was all blocked up,” explains Tony. “Waterco’s
Leisure Industry Week To Become A Two Day Event
Leisure Industry Week (LIW) organiser UBM Live has unveiled a new two-day format for the longstanding trade event as part of its ongoing repositioning strategy.
The event has seen falling attendances in recent years and despite the reintroduction of a much needed feature from the STA, its Pool & Spa section has been shrinking too.
UBM recently teamed up with ukactive to survey more than 40,000 industry professionals for feedback on the show. The information, together with data compiled from focus groups and consultations with key exhibitors and buyers, plus a suggestions hub at this year’s event,
14 February 2015 SPN
has been gathered to explore how the industry’s longest-running trade show can be developed to meet the changing needs of the sector.
Following the recent announcement and rebranding of the event as a health, wellbeing and fitness-focused show, the reduction in duration is further adjustment made in response to feedback.
LIW Event Director James Samuel advised there was a “clear desire” among participants to maximise their time at the event and reduce time away from workplaces, saying: “Return on time and investment are the key drivers for our audience, fitting the show into a new two-day format will provide an event that maximises both of these and again meets our audience needs.”
LIW 2015 will take place 22 to 23 September at the NEC in Birmgham.

EcoPure glass media removes 30% more materials and pollutants than sand, which saves time and water. It is also much less susceptible to bio-fouling, and lasts much longer than sand without needing replacement.”
Leisureland is a complete entertainment facility, with a fully fitted gym and fitness centre, a mini golf course, outdoor
fairground, restaurant and events centre on site along with the large main pool and kids’ pool.
As a public facility, Leisureland also needed to keep safety and environment in mind.
“Other media can contain a variety of contaminants, whereas EcoPure is chemically inert, leaving no nasties in the water,” explains Sean. “It doesn’t contain any crystalline free silica or heavy metals. The media is also made from 100% recycled glass, making it environmentally friendly.”
