Major boost to workplace skills » Glasgow Chamber supports the Certificate of Work Readiness
Ryan James, owner of Two Fat Ladies and Chairman of Glasgow Restaurant Association, was delighted to hear that Glasgow Chamber of Commerce was supporting Skills Development Scotland’s Certificate of Work Readiness (CWR), which provides extended work experience placements for 16 to 19-year-olds. It is aimed at young people who need work experience, along with training, to ensure they have the necessary workplace skills to help them secure permanent employment. Ryan offered two work placements and
one of them was lucky enough to secure permanent, full-time employment with Two Fat Ladies while the other young person went on to further education.

Mentoring programme
Inspiring500 to steer youngsters in right direction
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with The Herald, has launched an ambitious new mentoring programme that aims to help steer disadvantaged young people into better opportunities. The Inspiring500 programme
working along with MCR Pathways will seek to recruit 500 new volunteers from the business community to mentor young people in the greater Glasgow area. Launched by Glasgow-born
entrepreneur Iain MacRitchie, MCR Pathways has been working for six years in the east end of Glasgow linking young people with adults who can help them as the re-engage with school and move in a more positive direction. Glasgow Chamber’s involvement
follows feedback direct from business through the work of the Youth Employment Action Group that
mentoring is an important way to support our young people. The MCR Pathways project is
currently operating in six schools in Glasgow.
It is hoped that Glasgow Chamber members will use their expertise and connections in the business world to identify potential new mentors and encourage them to come forward.
Get involved If you are a motivated and committed adult you could support young people to overcome the barriers they face that mean so few make it through to higher and further education. What is needed is an hour a week
plus travelling time, a listening ear and the willingness to make a young person a priority. Training and support will be given to anyone signing up.
