AIRPORT IS FLYING HIGHER

Number of direct flights increases as airport heads towards eight million passengers

G

lasgow Airport has increased its number of direct flights significantly over the

past few months, marking a rapid period of growth for the airport. In recent months, the Airport

has announced Canadian airline WestJet’s direct flights to Halifax in Nova Scotia, while Virgin Atlantic and Tomas Cook have added direct flights to Las Vegas in the US, with new services by the later to Cuba from winter this year. New flights to mainland

Europe include a Luſthansa service to Munich in Germany, easyJet flights to Bordeaux in France and Jet2.com – which added a sixth aircraſt based at the airport – adding direct flights to Prague in the Czech Republic. Te arrival of budget carrier

Ryanair from October brought a total of seven routes to the airport, growing to nine in the summer season, which will mean an additional 850,000 passengers travelling through the airport.

“The final quarter of 2014 was particularly strong and we started the new year in an excellent position”

Ryanair flights include those to Carcassone in France and Chania in Greece. Te airport now has 30

airlines serving 110 destinations worldwide, including Canada, the US, the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa and the Gulf. Glasgow Airport secured a

total of 20 new routes and services during 2014 and a number of airlines – including Aer Lingus, Icelandair and Wizz Air – all added extra capacity. In line with a remarkable year

for the city, Glasgow Airport recorded its busiest year since 2008 aſter more than 7.7 million passengers travelled through its doors in 2014, representing an annual increase of 4.8 per cent.

In April, it became the first

airport to welcome the new Airbus A380 and in July it went on to complete a £20 million investment programme. And 2014 ended with a

remarkable series of business wins and announcements of new routes. October brought the welcome

news that Virgin Atlantic was to increase capacity on its Orlando service and Canadian airline WestJet further strengthened the airport’s long-haul connectivity with the announcement of the direct flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia. In November, Luſthansa

confirmed it would introduce direct flights to Munich from Glasgow, starting in May. Flybe

announced it would add capacity on its Belfast City service and the airline also confirmed it would introduce a new twice-daily service to Bournemouth, starting in March. Te growing number of direct

flights comes amid a remarkable period of growth for Glasgow Airport. In January, the airport recorded its 24th straight month of growth. Amanda McMillan, Managing

Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Te final quarter of 2014 was particularly strong and we started the new year in an excellent position. Having succeeded in securing 20 new routes and services in 2014, we fully expect to move back above eight million passengers this year. “With events such as the World

Gymnastics Championships, the Davis Cup, the European Judo Championships and the Turner Prize already lined up, 2015 is set to be yet another bumper year for Glasgow.”
