We’re powering into the future in 2015

In this issue, we highlight Glasgow as an economic powerhouse. You will see many of the factors that have transformed our city’s economy. Indeed, there are many

developments that give your Chamber firm confidence in the economic future of the Glasgow city region. There are a number of

initiatives by business, academia and government that are changing Glasgow’s economic heft. The opening of the Technology

& Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde will provide an important opportunity to bring together engineers and engineering companies with the university and other institutions. The centre will be a hub for world-

leading research, aiming to transform the way academics, business, industry and the public sector work together in partnership. Together, the partners will seek tangible solutions to economic challenges in areas such as energy, health, future cities and manufacturing and those solutions will help companies to compete globally. University of Strathclyde is the Weir Advanced Research Centre, where the company and the university will work together on the design of competitive new products for global markets. This year will also see the opening

of South Glasgow Hospital, where business and academia will be co-located alongside the NHS with the support of government at both national and local levels, working together to cultivate health and life sciences as another key strength of the city’s industrial base. The All Energy Conference will

come to Glasgow in an event that will mark one of the key themes of the year in the city region. We will also see the opening

of three speculative Grade A office developments in the city centre, a striking expression of confidence in the economy of the city. These developments will help to satisfy a recommendation in the Glasgow Economic Commission report calling for an increase in the supply of Grade A office provision, particularly for the financial services sector. More progress will be made in building the enormous new facilities for City of Glasgow College, symbolising the impact that our three new super colleges will have on the skills base of our city. It will be another important year

for tourism for the city, with the In World Gymnastics Championships coming here in October. It is an event that will attract major world nations, including those that are not part of the Commonwealth, including Japan, China and the United States of America. And your

Chamber will be focusing on getting the most for the city out of the economic recovery

including continuing its support for the management of the city centre with initiatives such as the City Centre Strategy and the Sauchiehall Street Business Improvement District. We will also be continuing to work alongside Glasgow City Council in creating more opportunities for young people, helping them to become more skilled and employable and helping them get into the world of work. Your Chamber will also continue

to do all we can to support the development of rail access to Glasgow Airport through the City Deal. We will also be working along with the City Council to refine and develop Glasgow’s economy strategy. Together we shall continuously seek to improve the co-operation between the private and public sectors for the benefit of our membership and all in the city region.
