CITY DEAL – A GAME
CHANGER Glasgow and Clyde Valley councils have signed a £1.13 billion City Deal with the UK Treasury and the Scottish Government, which is the first of its kind outside of England. Councillor Gordon Matheson,
the Glasgow City Council Leader, outlined details of the City Deal at the State of the City Economy Conference.
He said: “Our City Deal is an
economic and political game- changer. It has three strands: infrastructure, innovation, and jobs and skills. The infrastructure fund will pay for 20 projects enhancing transport networks, and key development and regeneration sites.” The fund will aim to lever
three times its value in private sector investment, creating 29,000 net permanent new jobs, plus 15,000 additional construction jobs. The 20 individual projects include a direct rail link to Glasgow Airport, and the decontamination of sites along the Clyde waterfront that will unlock swathes of land for redevelopment.

educational institutions and three colleges in the city itself, which have 130,000 students currently enrolled. Together, these institutions give the city a highly distinctive educational mix. Te University of Glasgow
has the longest heritage and is currently ranked 51st in the world with notable skills in accounting and finance, cancer studies, cardiovascular medicine, dentistry and engineering. Strathclyde, which was the
UK’s University of the Year in 2012 and Entrepreneurial University of the Year 2013, has distinctive strengths including having a Business School that is one of only five in the world that is triple accredited. Strathclyde University’s
world-class engineering track record will be furthered with the launch later this year of the Technology and Innovation Centre, which will involve the co-location of business and

academic research at its George Street base. Glasgow Caledonian
University is a clear leader in inclusive learning, has strengths in many practical disciplines in allied health research and in the built and natural environment. It is spreading its geographical footprint and international standing with campuses in New York and London. Te universities and colleges
provide fundamental support to business and industries in Glasgow and are major businesses in their own right, atracting 12,500 overseas students to the city. City of Glasgow College is the
largest in Scotland, currently investing £228 million in a new facilities to house 40,000 students alone.
Te 10th strength is the record
in visitor atraction: our tourism industry is robust and with great growth potential. Te Commonwealth Games
and the MTV Awards in 2014 helped the city present afresh its range of tourist atractions. Tat performance will be continued this year with the hosting of the World Gymnastic Championships. Glasgow City Marketing
Bureau is acknowledged as the UK’s Best Convention Bureau and has been for the past eight years. Glasgow atracts 2.3 million
visitors a year spending £495 million and is the sixth most visited city in the UK by overseas visitors with the US and Germany being the top markets. Hotel occupancy for the city’s 11,400 rooms in 2013 was 78.5 per cent,
beating cities such as Hamburg, Amsterdam and Barcelona. Te city is widely recognised
as the second city of retail in the UK, second only to London. Glasgow has a thriving
conference business with 560 conferences in 2013/14 atracting nearly 500,000 delegates and £136 million of economic value. It has a particular strength in life science and medical conferences with 40 per cent of delegates in these disciplines coming from overseas. Te city’s transport sector is
strong with Glasgow Airport being Scotland’s long haul hub that hosts major carriers such as Emirates, US Airways, United Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Glasgow Central Station is
Scotland’s busiest railway station and the second busiest in the UK outside London. Te Riverside Museum was
European Museum of the Year in 2013 and the SSE Hydro has quickly become the second most visited music concert venue in the world. Glasgow is also a top ten sporting city.
