GLASGOW BUSINESS FEBRUARY 2015

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive chiefexecutive@glasgowchamberofcommerce.com

Green Year is a chance for Glasgow’s industries to shine

Your Chamber is supporting Glasgow City Council in its ambition to transform the city into one of the most sustainable cities in Europe. And we know Glasgow City Council will use the

Green Year to make further progress in a suite of initiatives to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and respond positively to climate change. For a city with Glasgow’s industrial past still carrying many reminders of that heritage, in the form of vacant industrial land and factories and redundant infrastructure, the target for carbon emissions reduction is ambitious. Glasgow has committed to

meeting its target to reduce its carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2020 – a challenge that requires determined action over the next five years. Delivering the Commonwealth Games has

shown that Glasgow’s leadership has the capacity

and capability to tackle the most complex and pressured projects. The Games was prepared with time to spare and within budget. Glasgow’s Green Year 2015 will exploit that leadership. While the Green Year will see the city working on areas such as using water more wisely, reducing the volume of waste and its impact and improving air quality, one of Glasgow Chamber’s objectives will be increasing the contribution our local engineering base can make in solving such issues. We want Glasgow to be

recognised again as the UK’s most important engineering centre and we believe the Green

Year will help. We are a member of the Sustainable Glasgow Board and we will use our membership to help grow our engineering industry as the city delivers on its green goals. We also want to make sure that Glasgow’s businesses are participating in all the initiatives

to bring down carbon emissions because reduced energy consumption means lower costs. To help, we have established a Green Business Network which already has 50 member companies involved, so please look out for its work throughout the year. A key date in the year and central event in these

efforts will be the All Energy Conference which this year moves from Aberdeen – where it has been for 14 years – to its new home in Glasgow’s SECC. The event, to be held on 6 and 7 May, will

feature an exhibition that will showcase the complete range of renewable and sustainable technologies. Visitors are expected from more than 40 nations to attend an event which will feature the largest gathering of renewable energy developers and supply chain partners seen anywhere in the UK. It promises to be an important year for what can be done in meeting these vital challenges and in continuing the momentum for the Glasgow city region economy after all that was achieved in 2014.
