LETTER FROM THE BY LAURA SHELTON, CMP
Making Time for Education
this weekend, providing details on all of my continuing education, it reminded me of how important frequent recurring education is. Needing a few more hours to qualify, I ended up spending an entire afternoon viewing webinars. While they were all great and very informative, I would have benefited much more had I committed earlier in the year to setting aside time each and every month to par- ticipate in some sort of educational event or webinar. Tis led me to think about DATIA’s

many and varied educational opportuni- ties, all of which qualify for CEUs. Given that DATIA offers real-time webinars, archived webinars, online training courses, in-person training courses, and an annual conference with over 20 sessions; there is something for everyone. For those that prefer to learn from the comfort of his or her office, DATIA offers monthly webinars. What some may not realize is that all of the webinars are also recorded and archived so that they can be viewed at any time. Currently, there are nearly fiſty webinars online that can be purchased and viewed. In addition, DATIA offers six online training courses that can be taken where participants complete them at their convenience and on their schedule. Add to that our nine in-person courses offered three times a year and our annual conference offered each spring, and you’ll see that DATIA is working to exceed the educational needs of its members. So, what does this all mean? I encour-

ity. Whether it’s a webinar, taking time to really read DATIA focus, or holding a team meeting on an area from which all staff can learn, you will stay up to date on industry trends, remain motivated, and perform your duties more effectively. What’s more, activities such as webinars can be turned into a full-office educa- tional experience. Grab everyone in the conference room, project the webinar onto a large screen, let everyone learn from the presentation, and finish the event with an in-office, follow-up discus- sion. This not only provides education for everyone, but also further fosters team morale. What’s important here is that you
make the time to constantly advance your knowledge. How you decide to go about doing that is whatever what works best for you. As you can see DATIA offers a wide variety, however, there are also many other options available. These include books on general business, a wealth of online training opportunities on just about any topic, and activities as simple as scheduling a lunch with a col- league to discuss areas of interest. I encourage you to take the time now
to make an investment in your future. Ev- eryone gets caught up in the day to day, but by making an appointment to step back and advance your skills on a regular basis, you will find that it will help you work smarter and even save you time. ❚
Best,
Laura Shelton, CMP DATIA Executive Director
