provide a broader, more comprehensive understanding of drug use trends in the United States. While the absolute prevalence rates may vary and there may be a lag before the trends are observed in all of the datasets, they generally provide the same directional information and can help inform employers of what drugs they may need to be con- cerned about in their drug-free workplace programs and trends they might expect to see in their drug testing results. ❚
Barry Sample, PhD, is Director of Science and Technology for the Employer Solutions business unit of Quest Diagnostics. Dr. Sample is responsible for the
production and introduction of new products and services through new test, informatics, and technology development. Dr. Sample joined Quest Diagnostics in 1991. Under his direction, the Atlanta laboratory, which was accredited by the International Olympic Committee, provided the doping control services for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. Currently, Dr. Sample is extensively involved in numerous professional organiza-
tions. He is a Regional Commissioner and an inspector for the College of American Pathologists (CAP)/FDT laboratory accredita- tion program, serves as a member of the Tennis (ATP Tour/ITF/WTA Tour) Anti-Doping Program Review Board and the National Basketball Association (NBA) Prohibited Substances Committee, and is on the Board of Directors for the Substance Abuse Program Administrators Association. He is a lecturer and has co-authored numerous presentations and publications dealing with drug analysis, athletic drug testing and toxicology. Dr. Sample received his bach- elor’s degree in chemistry and his doctorate in pharmacology from Indiana University.
