I think it is most important to encourage and support people who give of their time for worthy causes, although as a company we do not actively seek or expect any ‘benefit’, but naturally hope that it can only enhance relationships.”


ALLOCATED BUDGETS Some of the larger estate agents make charitable work a part of their agency’s backbone. Hamptons, for example, allocates a sponsorship budget for each branch, which is spent on supporting local schools, church communities, village fetes, sports clubs and so on. So far this year, Hamptons International’s branches have supported 97 local events across 46 offices. This is an important initiative for every Hamptons branch and one which is valued by Hamptons’ clients.” At the start of 2011, haart launched the


‘haart in the community’ programme. Each branch is given a budget to support its


community to spend on anything from sponsoring a local school football team to supporting a community fair. Furthermore, staff across haart and all of the Spicerhaart Group, have been working behind the scenes raising money for the company’s charity – Magic Moments, which was established by Spicerhaart to raise funds to support the work of hospices throughout the country. It has provided the funds necessary to equip the Treehouse Lounge at the newly opened £3m hospice in Ipswich. Getting involved in large community


projects is something that Winkworth is especially keen on. The Devizes office is sponsoring the Eisteddfod festival, now in its 65th year. The music festival for 4-17 year olds based in Wiltshire is a mix of choral, orchestral music, poetry readings and acting. It takes place in five venues across the


town and the winners hold a concert in the town hall. Simon Jacobs, owner of


Winkworth Devizes is the Chairman and his wife Lisa, joint owner, is the secretary. Sponsoring an event, that as agents you


are already a part of, will obviously help you understand the benefits. In this case, Jacobs believes that the festival helps to get the local community together. Key benefits for his business include establishing links between Winkworth and the local stakeholders and councilors, demonstrating that Winkworth is part of the community and the general good will generated may potentially lead to instructions. “As a local estate agent it is so important


to connect with the local community,” said Jacobs. “Not only does it help build relationships with the decision makers in a local area, such as the councillors, but it also builds a sense of trust between us and our local residents. “Through supporting community events
