I often think that I like change, but what I really like is development, the upward journey and excitement of developing a new project. A year of personal and professional uncertainty about the future of the National Professional Qualification for Integrated Centre Leadership (NPQICL) helped me realise this about myself. In the process of looking

To escape my own inner rage I wanted to produce something that would be cathartic and help us to cushion the blow, so a patchwork cushion seemed a perfect metaphor. In talking and emailing back and forth with members of our team, the design began to take shape.


Two sides gave me plenty of space to incorporate a range of ideas that were generated within the two


Learning Communities I led. For one side, we collected tips for future leaders from Basingstoke, which is represented by the bunting fringe. A Wordle was generated from comments from our Bristol group, who were asked to share how they had changed during the 9 months of the programme. The starfish came from one of our facilitators, a story about saving one starfish at a time, a tale that fits the NPQICL personalised

The reverse side of the cushion focused on the


programme. From this side the delivery of the


multi-coloured bunting represents the diverse range of facilitators, participants, geography, stakeholders and models for children’s centres. The central aspects of the programme are held together by the ethos of Reflection, Challenge,


Dialogue and numerous learning journeys that have informed the programme.


The central patchwork represents the nine cohorts who completed the programme, since the national rollout in 2005. Three panels are crazy patchwork and acknowledge
