PEOPLE MAD Bec Slater

It’s official, we are all MAD... that is ...Making A Difference! That’s one of the main things that has been affirmed to me since participating in the NPQICL programme and I unashamedly borrow the MAD quote from fellow cohort 9 colleagues, as cited during Module four back in February 2014. That’s another thing I have learnt from the programme, the vast amount of knowledge and skills amongst that learning community and more importantly the willingness to share and support each other. I believe some firm relationships have been forged which will remain in place.

We are making a difference, to the lives of those families and children with whom we work. Whether we consciously realise it or not; that’s what keeps us doing what we do, when things get tough and when we get frustrated. But sometimes it can become overwhelming, and that is where new-found knowledge from my NPQICL journey comes into its own. The positive shift in my leadership, realising how I have grown and changed as a leader and backing that up with research and theory, helps me to face each new and challenging situation. I now have NPQICL skills to add to my leadership toolbox.

It’s not only my current workplace that will benefit from the new me. I believe these skills are transferable to any leadership role and they are also very handy at home; critical incident analysis works wonders with two teenage boys!! It’s also helped

my own health and well-being and boosted my confidence and self- esteem.

Re-establishing myself into student/ learning mode has given me permission to spend time researching, asking more questions, improving my own knowledge and given me a thirst to learn more. My journey is far from over.

I feel privileged, proud and extremely lucky to have been part of the final cohort for NPQICL; I wish more people could have the opportunity to share this experience.
