Feline When Andrea and Amelia met Jenny at the airport, just

days after Enzi’s passing, there were tears and laughter. Of course, Amelia was excited to have a new puppy and squealed with delight at the sight of her. Andrea’s tears were, under- standably, a combination of emotions. What lay ahead, she hadn’t a clue. But she took it as another sign from Enzi. Andrea had forgotten the challenges of raising a puppy.

Add to that, raising a four-year-old human, and who would have time to grieve? Even though Jenny was a sweet, adorable puppy, Andrea could not shake her profound sense of loss. She realized it was unfair to keep comparing the puppy to Enzi, who had grown into a proud, protective and very smart com- panion. While feeling no real animosity towards Jenny, Andrea had not fully accepted her. The two had yet to really bond. Andrea was also dealing with guilt about Enzi. Had she

done enough? Did she do too much? And what on earth was she doing with a puppy, she wondered? She questioned whether this was the way to honor Enzi’s life. In the meantime Jenny worked tirelessly for Andrea’s

affection, snuggling up to her, following her around like a shadow. It was clear that Amelia and Jenny were bonding. They played and took naps together and impishly con- spired in trying Andrea’s patience. Their mutual adora- tion and love for each other was working on Andrea. Watching them helped to dis- sipate some of the pain of losing Enzi. Her father also offered

her some sage guidance. “Enzi was a sweet girl. Loving and loyal. Jenny has big

paws to follow. But, if you love Jenny the same way you love Enzi, she will be there for you everyday of her life too. Remember, she is just a puppy and needs your attention and love,” he told her. Soon afterwards, without realizing it, Andrea suddenly

stopped feeling sad and guilty. She made a conscious effort to let it be and leave it to the universe. This new sense of calm allowed room in her heart for the new puppy without replac- ing the love she would always have for Enzi. Then one day, seemingly out of the blue while running

errands with Jenny, Andrea realized the dog had become her buddy. Because of Jenny, Andrea’s memories of Enzi started to become of their happy times together. Enzi has been physically gone for a little more than a year

now. But, she is never far from Andrea’s thoughts and will for- ever remain in her heart. As for Jenny, who has grown into a beautiful dog with

just a touch of adolescent mischief, Andrea says, “She is the happiest dog you will ever meet. I believe that Enzi picked her out especially for Amelia and me. My sweet Enzi-girl did good by sending me Jenny-bean. We always had each other’s back. But, Enzi got this last one.”
