Can this Dog Be Cured? Chronic Skin & Ear Infections - Part 2 in a series.

In our last issue (Spring 2014), we discussed Chloe’s chronic ear and skin problems and how they had worsened through- out 2013. Dr. Mark Brown with Central Animal Hospital is Chloe’s veterinarian. Towards the end of last year, our first order of business was to treat the infections. At the same time, Chloe was placed on a strict prescription diet for a minimum of 90 days. She was also bathed twice a week with a medicated sham- poo for about six

weeks. Luckily, she doesn’t mind baths. Earlier this year, we proceeded onto the next step in

Chloe’s treatment which would be to have her tested for allergies. In April, Chloe’s blood was drawn and sent to a lab- oratory, along with skin scrapings for a unique, proprietary round of testing. No wonder this dog has skin and ear issues. Her allergen

panels indicated that she is allergic to practically everything, from various types of mites, insects and fungi to all sorts of grasses and tree pollen. Dr. Brown narrowed the allergens down to a more manageable number. The lab would be cre- ating Therapy Drops from up to twenty of Chloe’s allergens, which would then be administered to her with drops under her tongue.

Admittedly, we were a little apprehensive to start treat-

ment. After all, we would be giving her a dose of exactly what she was allergic to. The goal is to build up an immunity to her allergens. Any adverse reactions (itching, scratching) would most likely occur within 48 to 72 hours. Chloe has been taking two drops under her tongue,

twice a day now for about two weeks with no negative reac- tions. She actually jumps for the drops (she receives a treat afterwards). We have another 60 days to go, but with encour- agement from Nancy Brown, Dr. Brown’s wife and his man- ager, we are hopeful. Their own dog, Ollie, a Boston Terrier, is on the program, and he has responded very well to it. Stay tuned for our next installment.

Central Animal Hospital has two locations in St. Petersburg: 4801 4th Street North and 2555 Pinellas Point Drive South. Dr. Mark Brown may be reached at 727.521.3518
