began drawing and sketching like never before. His love of carving blossomed into beautiful creations of birds, and then fish, which he sold at a fine art/gift shop in Ottawa and at artisan shows throughout the area. And he never looked back. An artist on many levels, Steve also enjoys carving things just for

seem to get the most attention. He admits he sometimes takes artistic license when he wants to, that he doesn’t always follow the rules. Some of the teeth of his fish, for instance, are bigger than they would normally be,

just because he likes the look of them. On the other hand, if he is

commissioned to carve a replica of a prized “catch”, he’s true to the original. In that case, he uses photos and exact measurements in order to get a perfect likeness. His clients often choose his precise carvings over taxidermy. He paints the fish with great care

and attention to detail in several layers and a marine varnish finish. The eyes are German hand-painted glass. No two fish are the same. He also makes perfect wooden

baits. They’re delightful as pieces of art, but they are apparently very effective, too. A long-time and experienced angler and hunter, Steve should know. (He is also an avid ice fisherman.) He likes to show you the projects

he has started just because he had to. One day he watched as a magnificent osprey swooped down and grabbed a fish from the water. The minute he got home, Steve knew he had to try to capture that bird’s likeness in wood. “I’m an artist and I can’t help

myself,” he says from his studio in back of the house he shares with his high school sweetheart, Sue Wilson. “There are just so many ideas.”
