Something fishy? Every visit to St. John’s must
include the Duke of Duckworth on Murdoch’s Lane. You won’t find Christian Doyle from the CBC’s Republic of Doyle tending bar here. There’s an ample selection of spirits and draft beers, but the real attraction is the tastiest fish and chips on the island. Locals swear by The Duke’s
fish and chips and swear at a better- known chain: Chess’s. Fish and chips dinners sampled at more than a dozen independent restaurants across the province confirm this assessment.
Aged to perfection Walking distance from The Duke
are several well-stocked whisky bars. The Gypsy Tea Room (yes!) offers a broad selection of Scotches and other whiskies, as does its neighbour, Blue on Water, whose big draw is barrel-aged cocktails. Manager Peter Barrington ages Sazeracs, Negronis, and Old Fashioneds in small white oak barrels, bottling them only when they reach perfection.
