status of our whitetail herd, there simply isn’t room in camp for meat hunters. Take a deer where it’s legal, but don’t be greedy. It’ll likely require many years of limited tag availability and improved deer-yard management to us get back on track.

Gobble gobble up the valley Have you heard gobbling up the Valley recently? The Ontario fall turkey hunt kicks off October 14th this year and runs until the 26th

, and

folks in Pembroke are surely doing the gobbler dance (if there is such a thing). This past April a new open

season for wild turkey was created in the Pembroke area. Hunting for wild turkeys was first initiated in the province in two Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) back in 1987. Since then, the hunt has expanded to include new WMUs each year; as turkey populations increase in their range and numbers. Based on population indices, this new Pembroke district turkey season was established much to the joy of hunters up the Valley. Testing, testing The soon to be released Kamik Coldcreek hunting boots I field-tested just in time for hunting season were a real eye-opener for me, from one Canadian manufacturer I have never tried before. The Coldcreeks have Central Canada’s deer season written all over them! They are solid and snug, featuring 9 mm waterproof “Stretch Neoprene” uppers with a waterproof adjustable weather collar. Kamik’s moisture wicking air

mesh keeps your feet dry and warm during those long days afield, and a fleece lining with special antibacterial treatment insures a clean and comfortable walk in the woods. The styling of the new Coldcreeks was somewhat reminiscent of my

old Nokians from 25-years ago, but with a much more advanced feel and support. Kamik’s fitlock technology ensures a comfortable ride as the new Coldcreeks provided great support on a variety of terrain during my pre-season scouting and trail-cam set-up. The famous Canadian boot maker has succeeded in catering to a burgeoning hunting boot market without compromising on comfort

and support. I give the new Kamik Coldcreek

boots a solid “two toes up”. For more information on Kamik’s full-line of hunting footwear: http://www. kamik.com/b2c_us_en/men-boots- hunting-w14.html
