was as interesting as yesterday’s tour on the South Shore but more rugged and somehow more authentic with fishermen’s houses and sheds hugging the tide-tortured coast. The tour ended back in Chester for a libation and the

contemplation of one’s luck in being able to live or even visit here. Monday was a return to The Deck for one of Annie’s

breakfasts and then a tour up the coast to Halifax. The coastal highway is a sinuous route hugging the rocky coastline chock-a-block with scenic fishing villages, with the homes and sheds built in the unique Atlantic style. I inhaled the view and the smell of the salt water from a speeding BMW, because the roads were meant to corner while we caught one spectacular view after another. Halifax is a government/university town that people

from Ottawa will recognize; just add one of the best natural harbours in the world and lots and lots of history. We toured the Historic Properties, a tourist-friendly

shorefront in the shadow of the citadel, to enjoy the sights and sounds of this historic port. While watching the people and the harbour we payed homage to the SACKVILLE (the last remaining Canadian corvette). Later we completed the “must do” of first visiting the

Keith’s Brewery and later the Lower Deck pub. It was while lounging on the upper deck of Keith’s Brewery (Red Stag Tavern) that we were informed by

Emily that Halifax was “a place where even a stranger can feel at home”. The next day we toured down the south shore and then

the western shore, past Oak Island to Lunenburg; then Clearwater and on to Kejimkujik (seaside) National Park. I held on while we hugged the shoreline on great narrow roads that followed each curve of the coastline. We saw quaint fishing villages, tourist-friendly towns

with great fish shops, harbours and bays full of sailboats. All on a sports-car-lover’s road full of twists and turns, with the anticipation of the next spectacular view around continued on page 37
