GONE TOO SOON continued from page 15

the same weekend, my daughter and her family booked campsite 7, making it an extended family vacation. In the weeks preparing for the

event, I pulled out and examined our old canvas tent. I was standing in the backyard, in awe of the fresh smell of canvas, thinking it was in great shape after 35 years of gentle use, when I heard: “If you think I am sleeping in that thing, you’re crazy!” After some discussion, I gave in.

Off to the hardware store I went to purchase one of those tents they say you can erect in 60 seconds. (I’d like to know who those people are.) The next task was to see how much

currently committed to hunting with the guys associated with “Boogieman Hunt Camp” (see Bounder Fall 2011) – but perhaps some day, Evan! Another highlight of the summer

was in August when I booked campsite 2 on Redhorse Lake (see Bounder Spring 2012), where Ann and I went camping together for the first time in more than 30 years. On

camping equipment my children had left me over the years. I was somewhat startled to find they had been very generous by returning most of it. I even found our old Coleman lantern that I lit up with a few modifications on the first try without blowing myself up.

One of our best purchases prior to the trip was the queen-size blow-

up mattress complete with battery operated pump so we didn’t have to sleep on the ground. The pump also ensured I wouldn’t pass out when attempting to inflate it manually. With all our equipment, we finally

arrived on the lake, loaded the boat with all our gear and headed for the campsite. When we got there it was almost as though time had stood still, just as I had remembered it – serene and beautiful. While I erected both tents, the

brand new one in which to sleep and the old canvas tent where we stored our precious cargo, Ann prepared the kitchen area. That evening over the camp fire we reminisced and marvelled at how quickly time passes. Our four-day visit there this

summer sure brought back some great memories about the lake. We found a new pike and pickerel hole. We watched the sun rise from beneath the horizon on a couple of occasions. And just like old times, we even had a feed of crawdads.
