Here’s what I found Well, before I get to that, let me ex-


plain what my research measured. The club decided that our next chal- lenge would be my research project and it would be successful if one of two things happened: People lost weight or they increased their amount of physi- cal activity. We also wanted to mea- sure motivation, something that very few studies do and which, ironically, is to what most people attribute their success. My study hypothesis then was “to


determine if participation in a 12-week weight loss challenge in a commercial fitness centre would result in weight loss, greater physical activity or in- creased motivation.” And, since we thought that one par-


ticipant could possibly experience all three of these, we also sought to deter- mine if the changes were sustainable. Would the participants have main- tained their weight loss, increased physical activity and/or increased mo- tivation 14 weeks post-challenge?


Let the next challenge begin The only difference between this


challenge and our previous challenges was that this time participants would complete questionnaires at the begin- ning, the end and 14-weeks post chal- lenge, and they would be anthropo- metrically measured 14-weeks post challenge. The questionnaires were validated surveys used to assess mo- tives and behavioural regulations to- ward exercise which tried to determine why people exercised. The behavioural change theo-


ry used for this study was Deci and Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory. This theory has been shown to effectively define and explain the mechanisms behind initial and sustained participa- tion in physical activity and is the only behaviour change theory to quantify motivation. We also included a control group of


club members who were measured and who answered the questionnaires but did not receive any assistance. They were instructed to “do as they do” for the duration of the study.
