since its 1967 construction and collapse on Dec. 28, 2013, creating an impassable chasm. A cement truck slipped 100 feet toward the ocean but the driver was unhurt. While Mexico struggles to reopen the road,

Oscar Escobedo, Baja’s secretary of tourism, said tourists can use the old road as an alterna- tive, which he said will only add 15 minutes to their travel time. That might have been true be- fore but with all the truck and regular traffic diverted at La Fonda, the narrow curvy free road has become congested. In late March, after over two months of

study and input from various governmental and civil organizations, the Mexican govern- ment said it is rebuilding along the same route, creating greater stability and better drainage this time so a similar tragedy might be pre- vented. They expect to be finished by the end of 2014. In the meantime, they recommend motorists either use the old road, or drive east along the border to Tecate and take Highway 2 down.
